Our Services Sub-System Testing

EAL has two re-purposed engine firing bays allowing hazardous testing on propulsion sub-systems for customers, using live or simulant propellants.

A subsystem test is one that involves testing the propulsion subsystem – it can be anything from:

  • The initial leak check at blanket pressure (usually 2 bars) through to internal and external leakage checks
  • Functional checks of the latch valves and thrusters (opening and closing response times)
  • Pressure transducer calibration, cleanliness checks
  • Valve operationFlow checks etc

Sub-system testing allows us to perform extremely hazardous tests with live propellants and subsystems in safe conditions. For example, we currently have the breadboard model for the Lunar Gateway Fuel Delivery System in the B1 test bay, where we are simulating refuelling lunar landers in orbit around the moon in preparation for the return to the moon in 2024. The test bays are made out of thick concrete and armour plating with blast walls and blast areas around them so that, should there be an explosion, it is safely dissipated, and the propellant is caught in a large bund beneath the test bay. This way, it can be neutralised and safely disposed of in case of leaks.

We have tested development model propulsion systems with live propellant and conducted extreme testing of pyrotechnic valves as well as soak tests using propellants and oxidisers. Each bay has a corresponding control room with high-speed data acquisition systems that allow fast data capture of pressure and temperature, as well as accelerometers if required. This means that any transients are captured during operations. There are very few companies that can offer the facilities to perform this type of tests with live propellants (as well as high-pressure testing with gas).
